Who uses a Spiritual Life Coach?
Spiritual Life Coaching is for motivated people who are ready to make deep
changes in their life in order to realize their God-given dreams and fulfill
their purpose in life. Any Christian can benefit greatly from coaching. Individuals
must want to become all that God intends for them to be and to live out their
calling in life. They must have a desire and commitment to serve God’s
purposes, an open heart and mind, and willingness to do the necessary work.
At the heart of realizing our God-given dreams and fulfilling our purpose in
life is being in a deep, vital relationship with God and letting God work in
us and through us. When Christ said that he came to bring a full and abundant
life to us, he meant that through an ongoing relationship with him we might
experience being filled and led by the Holy Spirit on a daily basis. This Spirit-filled
and Spirit-led living leads to fruitfulness, joy and a deep satisfaction in
our relationships and work. Spiritual depth and vitality also links us better
to other believers and enhances our ability to serve Christ together.
Living out our purpose also requires gaining relevant knowledge and skills
related to our calling in life, and finding the right kind of encouragement
and support to be successful in every aspect of our life. Gathering these resources
often requires outside resources. This is where Spiritual Life Coaching and
Consulting can help.
As a Spiritual Life Coach, I combine relevant biblical teaching, professional
life coaching, intelligent encouragement, spiritual counseling, and leadership
consulting in one ministry. In selecting clients, I prioritize pastors, nonprofit
leaders, and other Christian people of influence who highly value personal,
professional and spiritual growth, and who are committed to serving Christ’s
purposes. I work one on one with individuals or with leadership teams as
a group to help them set vision and make needed changes to pursue their dreams
and priorities more effectively.
Spiritually, I help clients grow deeper in their relationship with God and
learn how to let God lead them more fully and fruitfully in every aspect of
their life. Ultimately, in helping Christian ministers, leaders and other motivated
people of influence, my work with clients is designed to strengthen churches,
ministries, and organizations, and to further the kingdom of God.
How Spiritual Life Coaching Works
In Spiritual Life Coaching, the client sets the agenda, identifies the vision,
and creates the solutions. Clients draw on their own creativity and resources,
including their relationship with God. As coach, I help clients to clear
away the obstacles and fears inhibiting their life and to keep on track with
their
vision so that they can realize their dreams and fulfill their purpose in
life. Prayer and spiritual counsel are important dimensions of the coaching
or consulting
relationship in keeping with the client’s desires.
In the context of a trusted relationship, clients are inspired, taught and
encouraged to do the following, usually over a three to six month period of
time:
• clarify their own values and priorities
• develop a highly motivating vision for key aspects of their life
• set attainable goals to pursue their vision
• create strategies to deal with persistent obstacles that distract or
bog them down
• increase and focus their energy
• find adequate support and accountability to persevere in pursuing their
vision
• develop greater skills and experience in Spirit-led living and leading
We begin with an extended Discovery and Design session to help clients assess
their level of satisfaction in ten major areas of their life: vocation, service,
spouse/significant other, family, spirituality, finances, health, friends,
fun/recreation, and personal growth. From there, clients choose to focus on
their highest priorities, and the work of pursuing their vision for their life
and leadership continues in earnest.
Sessions are usually conducted by phone or Skype.
Leadership Consulting
It’s lonely at the top. One of the hardest things for many leaders is
feeling as if they have no one to talk to. Often there is no one with whom
they share their deepest fears and concerns. There’s no one with whom
they can dream and bounce off their radical ideas without causing a stir
among staff, Board members, or other constituents.
It’s also hard to find others who truly understand the full range of
feelings and the types of concerns that come from having the buck stop with
you. Where do you go to find perspective? Where do you go for support? Where
do you go for creative ideas, practical management decisions, wisdom for
troubleshooting sticky personnel issues? Where do you go to talk about how
you are changing,
growing, and envisioning your own future, without risking your authority
and ability to lead effectively?
After spending years on the staff of churches of various sizes, as senior
pastor of a small church, and executive director of a multi-million dollar
nonprofit
ministry, I have learned a great deal about effective leadership—some
from successes, some from learning from others, and a lot from missteps, failures,
and wrong turns. I’ve also developed a great deal of empathy for fellow
leaders, who are struggling to make the most of their leadership opportunity.
Now that I have turned my attention to full time teaching, coaching and consulting,
I’m in a unique position to walk with other leaders to help them to
realize their God-given dreams and fulfill their purpose in life more effectively.
Leadership Consulting complements Spiritual Life Coaching by focusing attention
on specific challenges and issues that a leader is addressing. I offer consulting
in conjunction with coaching over an extended period of time, or separately
on a session by session basis. By drawing on my expertise in Christian-based
leadership and my pastoral skills, I offer knowledgeable perspective, meaningful
support, and practical guidance to help others flourish as leaders. In turn,
the guidance and support I offer to leaders is intended to help their ministries
and organizations to become more healthy and fruitful.
In choosing consulting clients, I give priority to pastors, nonprofit leaders,
and other Christian people of influence, who want to exercise their leadership
gifts in ways that feel better and serve the mission of their organization
more effectively. My particular areas of expertise include:
• spiritual depth and vitality
• spiritual leadership
• nonprofit management
